How to Enjoy Oktoberfest without Gaining Weight

Is it possible to celebrate Oktoberfest without gaining weight? After all, when you think about the menu, it’s primarily made of heavy foods and beer. Not exactly the most weight loss friendly eating strategy. However, just because you’re trying to lose weight, it doesn’t mean that you can’t take part in Oktoberfest this year. You just need to do so strategically.

There are three main schools of thought when it comes to trying to get through Oktoberfest without gaining weight. The first is to give up and accept the fact that everything is high in carbs and fats so a pound or two are likely to be packed on.

The second is to decide that because the celebration is so diet-unfriendly, you shouldn’t participate at all. The third is to have a closer look at every part of the celebration to find out how you can still have a great time without ending up larger after it’s all done.

The main thing that you can do to enjoy Oktoberfest without gaining weight is to moderate the amount of beer you’re drinking. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have any beer at all. But it does mean that you can’t guzzle it all night long. Drink it to enjoy the taste, to savor the way it pairs with your meal and to be a part of the festivities. Don’t knock back one beer after the next just because of the celebration.

Beer is high in carbs, high in calories and contains alcohol. Those are all components that work against the average weight loss strategy. However, if you’re reasonable about it, you can still enjoy it without skyrocketing your calorie count.

Next, eat a nutrient dense, portion controlled breakfast and lunch. Keeping in mind that most Oktoberfest meals are focused on dinner, you still have two other meals that are perfectly within your control. Concentrate on making sure those two other meals are high in nutrients and are well balanced. They should contain lots of antioxidants and fiber, as well. That way, you’ll have more wiggle room when it comes to the last meal of the day.

Drink lots of water. Drink water all day long as well as during your celebrations. If you have a beer in one hand, have water in the other one. This will keep you hydrated, suppress your appetites, keep your metabolism running high (for better fat burning) and will quench your thirst so you won’t rely on beer to do it for you quite as much.

Exercise portion control. You don’t need a giant portion of everything. Smaller portions can be just as satisfying because you’ll have been able to taste it all. There’s no reason to stuff yourself.

Exercise your body. Dance, walk and move about as much as possible. That way, you’ll burn off some of the calories you’ve taken in. It will also help you to feel happier so you’ll enjoy the festivities more.
