Flaxseeds for Weight Loss are Great Unless You Do This

Flaxseeds for weight loss have been a popular trend for several years now. However, what many of us don’t realize is that there is an extra step we need to take in order to enjoy this benefit. This is the case regardless of whether you’re adding them to your smoothie, your cereal or are eating them baked into a favorite treat.

Due to the popularity of flaxseeds for weight loss, products containing them often come with a premium price tag. However, that doesn’t mean you’re automatically getting premium benefits from what you eat. No, this doesn’t mean that there is a certain type of special flax you should be looking for. It’s simpler than that.

Why Flaxseeds for Weight Loss?

These tiny little brown seeds are packed full of heart-healthy benefits. They’re terrific for your skin, and they’re not difficult to find. They provide a wealth of omega-3 fatty acids. You can add them to anything from a salad to a meatloaf to spike the nutrition they provide.

However, if you’re just sprinkling whole seeds into your foods, you’re likely getting little to no benefit from them. If the flax bread you so proudly purchase for an extra cost has whole seeds on and in it, they’re going right through you. If you can see the full seeds in the foods you’re eating, you’re not using flaxseeds for weight loss. You’re just eating something to send out with your waste.

Why? Because the human body is not able to digest a whole flax seed. It will not break it down so the benefits are lost.

How to Enjoy Flaxseeds for Weight Loss

Fortunately, the solution to this problem is a simple one. Grind them or chop them! If you have a coffee grinder, spice grinder or a similar device, it’s all you need to pulverize those whole seeds. Even a mortar and pestle will do a good job since you typically need only a tablespoon or two at a time. That way, you can use flaxseeds for weight loss instead of eating something you can’t digest.

If you don’t want to go to the extra effort, you can simply buy some ground flaxseeds, also known as flax meal. That said, it’s important to note that ground flaxseeds turn rancid over time. They oxidize the longer they are in the air. Therefore, grinding them yourself is the best way to get the most out of your flaxseeds for weight loss.
