At this time of year, it’s difficult not to give in to the many different fattening temptations that seem to come at us from all directions. Sweet treats, heavy foods and too little time to keep up with an exercise program can rapidly lead to sudden weight gain. This seems to happen to us every year.
You never intend to go quite as overboard as you do, but then you realize that the sudden weight gain has taken hold. Unless you turn things around quickly, you’ll end up having to spend a fortune on new clothes because nothing will fit anymore!
The good news is that there are several things that you can do to combat sudden weight gain when it happens. Get on top of them quickly enough and you’ll be able to shed those added pounds almost as quickly as you packed them on.
The following are three of the top methods to reverse your extra holiday pudge:
1. Say “no” to salt – As much as it may look like all the added weight you’re experiencing is fat, the odds are that some of it is actually just water. However, unless you cut back on your salt intake, that retained fluid likely won’t be going anywhere soon. Start drinking lots of water and pay attention to the sodium levels in everything you’re consuming. At the same time, say “no” to using the salt shaker on anything you eat. You’ll be shocked at how quickly some of those added pounds seem to slide right off.
2. Eat a big breakfast – Skipping breakfast may be one of the worst things that you can do to lose weight. In fact, recent studies have shown that people who eat a larger breakfast tend to be fuller throughout the rest of the day and are therefore less likely to overeat at other meals and snack times. Take advantage of that knowledge and give yourself a good solid breakfast that includes some protein. An egg and something with whole grains such as steel cut oats with fresh berries could be the perfect thing to get your day – and metabolism – started right.
3. Slip in 5 minutes of exercise – It may not be easy to hit the gym for a half hour every day but everybody can spare 5 minutes here and there. Whether you’re waiting for a phone call, watching commercials between segments of your favorite show or headed up to the next floor at work, it’s time for you to exercise. Every little bit counts and it can add up quickly when you make a habit of exercising at every moment you can. Take the stairs at work, run on the spot during television commercials and do a few minutes of yoga as you wait for your important call.
